Lianna (1983)

This was one of the first lesbian lifestyle movies for a mainstream audience that examined an affair as a mostly emotional roller coaster rather than a sexual relationship. A married woman leaves an unhappy marriage and her two children to move in with a lesbian. Linda Griffiths plays the straying wife and Jane Halloren is the object of desire, a college psychology professor who may be returning to her old flame. Sayles, whose sensitive and uncompromising screenplay never hits a false note, plays a film professor and other support is provided by Jo Henderson, Jon De Vries, Jessica Wight MacDonald, Maggie Renzi, and, in a bit, Chris Elliott.
